The Duchess of Edinburgh has embarked on a poignant journey to Bosnia and Herzegovina to mark the 30th anniversary of the Srebrenica genocide, an event etched in the collective memory of Europe as one of its most devastating tragedies in recent history.
Touching down in Sarajevo, Sophie began her visit with a meaningful meeting at the official Presidency building, where she was welcomed by Željko Komšić, the Croat member of the country’s tripartite Presidency.
The two posed for a formal photograph before entering into discussions, setting the tone for a series of emotionally charged engagements ahead.
Her Royal Highness’s trip comes at a moment of solemn remembrance, as the nation and the international community reflect on the horrifying events of July 1995. Over 8,000 Bosniak Muslim men and boys were systematically killed in and around the town of Srebrenica during the Bosnian War. The massacre remains a chilling reminder of the consequences of hatred and division.
Sophie’s presence in Bosnia carries a powerful message—one of remembrance, healing, and unity. Her visit underscores the UK’s ongoing commitment to recognising and remembering the victims, as well as supporting those who continue to bear the scars of the war.
During the second day of her visit, the Duchess is scheduled to attend a commemorative ceremony at the Srebrenica-Potočari Memorial Centre. There, she will lay wreaths in honour of the victims and read a deeply moving message on behalf of His Majesty King Charles III.
The message, prepared especially for the occasion, is expected to reflect the gravity of the tragedy and the importance of international solidarity in remembering those lost.
Sophie will also meet with the Mothers of Srebrenica, a group of women who lost husbands, sons, and brothers in the genocide, and have spent decades seeking justice and recognition for their loved ones.
Additionally, she will engage with survivors of wartime sexual violence—many of whom have shown remarkable strength in sharing their stories and advocating for others.
