King Charles hosted a landmark youth summit at St James’s Palace today, exactly one year after launching a royal initiative to tackle youth violence and champion opportunity for disadvantaged young people across the UK.
The event brought together actor and philanthropist Idris Elba, a long-time supporter and alumnus of The King’s Trust, alongside participants from government, grassroots organisations, education, arts, and sports. The aim: to assess what progress has been made in the past year and strengthen pathways to success for young people affected by adversity.
Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer, Home Secretary Yvette Cooper, and Culture Secretary Lisa Nandy joined the summit, listening directly to youth voices and community organisations during panel discussions.
According to The King’s Trust, the summit offered a vital opportunity to evaluate ongoing efforts, identify gaps, and explore evidence-based approaches that reduce violence and foster empowerment. A report-back session, chaired by Ben Marson, Director at the Trust, followed the reception, showcasing measurable outcomes and successful partnerships.
A key outcome of the summit was the continued development of The Coalition to Tackle Knife Crime, a cross-government initiative formed in response to the discussions held at the palace in July 2024. The body aims to drive sustainable solutions to serious youth violence through policy, community engagement and targeted interventions.
As part of the summit’s agenda, The King’s Trust announced updates on its Creative Futures programme, developed in partnership with the Elba Hope Foundation, which uses the arts to inspire confidence and build essential life skills. The Trust is also working with the Youth Endowment Fund to strengthen the evidence base around what works in reducing youth violence across UK communities.
Elba, who received a £1,500 grant from The King’s Trust as a teenager to join the National Youth Music Theatre, shared his personal journey and the importance of creating opportunities for the next generation. “My path began with a small act of support. It’s now my mission to do the same for others,” he reflected.
The actor’s Don’t Stop Your Future campaign, launched in 2024, continues to gain traction in addressing youth violence, particularly knife crime. It builds on Elba’s longstanding private advocacy for victims and their families and has quickly grown into a powerful voice in community-led change.
Through the Elba Hope Foundation, which he co-founded with his wife Sabrina, Elba supports global causes ranging from food security and environmental conservation to youth empowerment and social justice. His foundation now works closely with The King’s Trust to provide tangible support to underserved communities in the UK, US, and Africa.
