Queen Camilla was formally installed as an Honorary Freeman and Liveryman of the Worshipful Company of Stationers and Newspaper Makers today at Stationers’ Hall, marking a new chapter in her longstanding support for literacy and education in the UK.
The historic ceremony, held in the City of London, paid tribute to the Queen’s dedication to promoting reading and literacy across the country. Her husband, King Charles, has been a member of the Company since 1983, having joined during his tenure as the Prince of Wales.
Founded over 600 years ago, the Stationers’ Company represents professionals in the book trade, publishing, printing, and wider communications industries. The Company remains deeply rooted in tradition, and the Queen’s installation adhered closely to its centuries-old customs.
Upon her arrival, Queen Camilla was greeted by the Lord Mayor of the City of London and the Master of the Worshipful Company of Stationers and Newspaper Makers. During the ceremony, Her Majesty donned the ceremonial gown of the livery and delivered a formal declaration, completing her official installation.
Stationers’ Hall, the second oldest livery hall in London, served as the ceremonial backdrop. The occasion reinforced the Company’s enduring legacy, stretching back to 1403, when it was formed by uniting the Scriveners, Lymners, and Book Binders. It received its Royal Charter from Queen Mary Tudor in 1557.
Following the formalities, Queen Camilla engaged with members of the Stationers’ charities and military affiliates, which focus on educational and rehabilitation efforts, including traditional bookbinding programmes.
She also met with members of the Stationers’ Foundation, which supports literacy through projects such as the Shine School Media Awards, encouraging secondary school students to create their own publications.
The Queen viewed exhibits highlighting the Company’s impact on the publishing and communications sectors before participating in a group photograph with members.
With approximately 1,000 members today, 90 per cent of whom work in related industries, the Worshipful Company continues to support initiatives that promote education, literature, and professional excellence across the UK.
