Queen Mary of Denmark, currently on holiday abroad with King Frederik, has taken a brief pause from her summer break to deliver a personal message through her Mary Foundation. The message, posted on Instagram, encourages Danes to embrace inclusion and support marginalised communities during the quieter holiday period.
At 53, the Queen remains deeply engaged with social causes despite being officially off duty. Her message offered a warm reflection on summer’s joys, while also calling attention to those left out of traditional community structures.
“Summer can do something really special,” Mary wrote. “Kids splashing in the cities’ pools and at the local beach. Bright, long evenings with the family. And the sound of happy students driving through the streets.”
She added a poignant reminder: “The summer reminds me seriously of the importance of community. How lovely and rewarding communities can be, but also how difficult it can be for those standing outside the community.”
With schools, clubs, and recreational centres typically closed, Queen Mary highlighted the risk of social isolation. “It takes more of all of us to reach out and invite others into community,” she urged.
“But I believe that community and sense of belonging arises when we see each other and make room for diversity in tolerant and diverse communities,” the Queen continued. She closed her post warmly: “I hope that summer brings presence, joy, and a sense of belonging. Have a great summer from us at Mary Foundation.” The message was signed “H.M. Dronningen.”
The Mary Foundation, founded by the Queen in 2007, works to improve the lives of vulnerable women and children across Denmark. Alongside the message, the Foundation posted a candid image of Queen Mary seated at her desk, wearing a blue blouse and glasses.
Although on break, King Frederik and Queen Mary are not entirely out of the spotlight. The Danish monarch was seen attending Wimbledon in London last week, although the precise location of their family getaway has not been publicly disclosed. During their absence, Queen Margrethe, now 85, has resumed her role as regent.
The royal couple will return to official duties later this month. On July 28, they are scheduled to begin their annual summer stay at Gråsten Palace, a tradition cherished by the Danish royal family. Then in August, the King and Queen will undertake a four-day cruise around Danish municipalities aboard the Royal Ship Dannebrog.
Before her break, Queen Mary made a stylish final public appearance in Aarhus, wearing a red Max Mara jumpsuit during Denmark’s ceremony marking its presidency of the EU Council—an outfit many interpreted as a fashionable tribute to the Danish flag.
Meanwhile, the couple’s eldest son, Crown Prince Christian, is preparing for a major step in his military career. The 19-year-old royal, who completed Guards Hussar training, is expected to begin Lieutenant’s training in August.
