Carlos Alcaraz Pays Emotional Tribute to King Felipe VI at Wimbledon

Carlos Alcaraz, following a hard-fought four-set loss to Jannik Sinner in the Wimbledon final on Sunday, used his post-match speech to deliver a heartfelt tribute to King Felipe VI of Spain. The 22-year-old tennis star, who was aiming for a third consecutive title at the All England Club, was visibly emotional as he turned his attention to the Royal Box, where the Spanish monarch had travelled to show his support.

“I don’t want to leave without saying that I just have to say thank you to the King of Spain, coming here in support for me,” said Alcaraz, addressing King Felipe directly. “Just an honour enjoying the stands, pouring, flying, flying here towards the final. So I’m just really grateful, and thank you very much for coming.”

The tribute prompted a warm smile and applause from King Felipe, who has been a loyal supporter of Alcaraz’s rising tennis career. His presence at Wimbledon 2024 marked a continued tradition, as he also attended Alcaraz’s triumphant final in 2023.

At that time, Alcaraz had affectionately said to the monarch: “Felipe, I’m really proud, you know, that you are here supporting me… I hope you are coming more.”

Despite falling short of victory this year, Alcaraz’s gracious post-match gesture further cemented the special bond between Spain’s young sports star and its royal family.

The Royal Box audience on Sunday, July 14, was a high-profile mix of royalty and celebrities. Seated near King Felipe were the Prince and Princess of Wales, along with their children Prince George and Princess Charlotte.

Prince Louis was notably absent. However, Kate Middleton made sure he wasn’t left out of the excitement—requesting three signed tennis balls from Sinner, one specifically “for their brother,” to avoid any disappointment at home.

Before the match began, the Spanish Royal Household released official images of King Felipe engaging in conversation with Kate and her family, highlighting the friendly diplomatic exchange between the British and Spanish royal families.

After clinching the title, Jannik Sinner also reflected on the royal encounter. “I asked the kids if they play tennis and asked them what kind of rackets they play with… It was amazing. I believe for us tennis players, it’s so nice to have them watching us because it makes it even more special,” he shared, adding that it was “a very nice moment” meeting the Princess of Wales and her children.

King Felipe also took the opportunity to personally congratulate Martín de la Puente, who celebrated a win in the wheelchair tennis doubles tournament, demonstrating his broader commitment to supporting Spanish athletes across competitions.

Adding to the star-studded atmosphere, the Royal Box welcomed an impressive guest list from Hollywood, including Nicole Kidman, Matthew McConaughey, John Lithgow, and Keira Knightley, making this year’s Wimbledon final not just a sporting highlight but a major royal and celebrity event.
