Princess Leonor, 19, had an emotional reunion with her family as she concluded a significant chapter of her military journey. The heir to the Spanish throne appeared in her crisp white naval uniform during the prestigious Presentation of Royal Dispatches ceremony in Marín, marking the official entry of officers into active service.
Her father, King Felipe, stood proudly in his own military attire as he awarded Leonor the Grand Cross of Naval Merit, a rare honour for such a young royal. The moment turned tender as the king embraced his daughter following the presentation, while Queen Letizia and Infanta Sofia looked on with heartfelt applause.
The reunion was especially moving for the queen, who wore a refined navy ruffled dress and appeared visibly emotional as she hugged her eldest daughter. Sofia, now 18, radiated joy as she welcomed her sister with a beaming smile.
Although Leonor was unable to attend Sofia’s graduation from UWC Atlantic College in Wales earlier this year, she had sent a heartfelt video message in support from abroad.
Leonor’s military journey has been intensive. Back in January, she embarked on a five-month training voyage aboard the Juan Sebastián de Elcano, a naval ship that carried her to multiple Latin American countries and New York. Upon returning to Spain, she continued her training aboard the frigate Blas de Lezo.
On Monday, the young royal was further honoured with the Gold Medal of Galicia during a ceremony in Santiago de Compostela. While she has not yet received a dispatch, Leonor has now been promoted to 2nd-class midshipman, a rank equivalent to a 4th-class second lieutenant in other Spanish military academies.
In the coming weeks, Leonor will begin the final phase of her three-year military education at the San Javier Air Force Academy in Murcia, rounding off a rigorous and symbolic path that underscores her preparedness as Spain’s future queen.
